"Lynn Emberg Purse - Electro Acoustic Wind Symphony" and "Keane - Little Broken Words"

One of my ideas for my CD cover was to further the idea of our main male character writing lyrics of the song down on paper as the song progresses.
I have taken inspiration from Lynn Emberg Purse and her CD for the electro acoustic wind symphony. I discovered this CD cover by researching into the genre that Chris Cohen has a focus area on and that is of electro acoustic music. I like how the CD cover has taken a sketched approach to the music notes on the paper, it gives the CD and the music they play an original feel to it that is attractive to its audience and displays its inspiration of the music itself (band inspirations). The reason I felt this type of cover would not be appropriate for “If you only knew” was because of the cold colour pallet that the CD uses, which in my opinion does not convey Chris Cohen’s intent to comfort and inspire. If I did choose this idea, I would modify it to a more sepia colour pallet, which would make the piece of music appear warmer to the audience and therefore more inviting and comforting.
Another aspect of this CD cover which made me decide against an idea such as this was the choice of font.
The font suggests to me to correlate with the sketched style of the music notes on the stave and also imposes an image “from the past” so to speak. I feel the type of font that I need to use to solidify Cohen’s beliefs and aspirations must have a sense of passion and softness, yet with a personal touch and intriguing for audience appeal, which I cannot pick up from the font that Lynn Emberg Purse has used for her cover.

An alternative CD cover that I took inspiration from that uses the same sketched approach as this CD is that of Keane – Little Broken Words. I think the use of black and white works well as it highlights what the band want the audience to notice with ease, which is that of the face on the drawing at the front of the cover in white, for us to capture his emotion. This works well with all the white raindrops (which could represent all the words) on a dark canvas (which could be the foundation of what is broken). The artistic font of the CD to me represents a winding journey of misunderstanding, which is partly the message of “If you only knew”, but what is also about the progression to improve the situation; Little broken words does not appear to show this.
For this reason therefore I have decided against this CD cover, firstly because of the choice of font, but secondly also for the choice of black and white. Just like Lynn Emberg Purse’s CD, I find the colour pallet too cold (and the imagery too depressive in the case of Little broken words). In the respect of drawing inspiration from an audience however, the originality and unique feel from a sketch is an idea I could most certainly use because the same drawing can be composed in many different ways by different people. This can relate to how people experience similar experiences in different ways, and what they will take from it and Chris Cohen’s story and lyrics from this song and his own approach.
